Raising hands in prayer
Raising the hands during prayer, also known as Raf' al-Yadayn, has been a major topic of discussion among Islamic scholars. This difference of opinion is considered one of the well-known issues in Fiqh.
One group of scholars holds that raising the hands is a Sunnah practice when going into ruku' and when rising from ruku'. Another group holds that the hands should only be raised at the beginning of the prayer (takbiratul ihram), once, and not repeated after that.
- Imam Abu Hanifa: only when opening the prayer (takbiratul ihram)
- Imam Malik: when opening the prayer, when going into ruku', and when rising the head from ruku'
- Imam al-Shafi'i: when opening the prayer, when going into ruku', and when rising the head from ruku'
- Imam Ahmad: when opening the prayer, when going into ruku', and when rising the head from ruku'
The madhab of Imam Abu Hanifa went to the narration of Ibn Mas'oud where he mentioned that the Prophet (ﷺ) did not raise his hands except at the opening of prayer:
ʿAbdullāh (ibn Mas'oud) narrated: “Shall I not demonstrate the Salat of Allah's Messenger to you?” Then he prayed, and he did not raise his hands except once.
[Sunan an-Nasa'i 1058, Sunan Abi Dawud 748, Sunan al-Tirmidhi 257]
The madhab of Imam Malik, Imam al-Shafi'i, Imam Ahmad went to the narration of Ibn Umar where he mentioned the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands at the opening of prayer, when going into ruku', and when rising from ruku':
Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would raise his hands parallel to his shoulders when he entered into prayer, and when saying Allahu Akbar when going into ruku'. When he raised his head from ruku', he would likewise raise his hands and say, “Sami'allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana walakal hamd.” The Prophet (ﷺ) would not do so (raising the hands) between the (two) prostrations.

ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Sufyān narrated to us, who said: Qāsim ibn Aṣbagh narrated to us, who said: Abū ʿUbaydah ibn Aḥmad narrated to us, who said: Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, who said: Ashhab ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: I accompanied Mālik ibn Anas for a year before his death, and he did not die except that he practised the raising of his hands (in prayer).
It was said to Yūnus: Did Ashhab describe the raising of the hands from Mālik? He said: Ashhab was asked about it more than once, and he would say: He raises his hands when opening the prayer (the opening takbīr), when he intends to go into rukūʿ, and when he says: “Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah.”
Yūnus said: Ibn Wahb narrated to me, saying: I accompanied Mālik on the road to ḥajj. When we reached a place mentioned by Yūnus, my she-camel came close to his, so I said: “O Abū ʿAbdillāh, how does the one praying raise his hands in the prayer?” He said: “And about this you ask me? I do not like to hear this except from you.” Then he said: “When he enters into iḥrām, when he intends to go into rukūʿ, and when he says: ‘Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah.’” Abū ʿUbaydah said: I heard this from Yūnus more than once.
And in al-Mustakhrajah, from the narration of Ashhab and Ibn Nāfiʿ from Mālik, he said: The one praying raises his hands when he raises his head from rukūʿ and says: “Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah.” He said: Raising the hands is not obligatory, and in that there is flexibility.
Al-Ṭabarī mentioned: Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us from Ashhab, from Mālik, similar to that. And those behind the imām raise their hands following his raising when he says: “Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah.” He said: Raising the hands is not obligatory, and in that there is flexibility.

“The one praying raises his hands in the first rak‘ah three times, and in what follows of the prayer, two times each.
He raises his hands at the beginning of the prayer with the opening takbīr, level with his shoulders. He also does this at the takbīr for bowing, and when saying, ‘Sami‘a Allahu liman hamidah’ when rising from bowing.
There is no opening takbīr except in the first (rak‘ah). In every rak‘ah there is the takbīr for bowing, and the statement ‘Sami‘a Allahu liman hamidah’ when rising from bowing, and he raises his hands in these two places in every prayer.”

This has been narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ) by more than ten men.
Sufyan informed us from ‘Asim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from Wa’il ibn Hujr, who said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising his hands at the opening of the prayer, when he intended to bow, and when he rose from bowing.’

Ahmad was asked: A man has heard these hadiths from the Prophet – peace be upon him – and then does not raise (his hands). Is his prayer complete?’
He said: ‘I do not know, but to me, it is blameworthy in itself.’”
[Masail Abu Dawud - Page 50]
Abu Dawud mentioned:
Ahmad was asked: ‘What about raising the hands when standing up from the two prostrations?’ He said: ‘As for me, I don't do that.’
It was said to him: ‘Between the two prostrations, should I raise my hands?’ He said: ‘No.’”
[Masail Abu Dawud - Page 51]
Ibn Abdul-Barr mentioned:
Al-Athram said, and I heard others say, that people ask about raising the hands at rukūʿ and when raising the head from it. He said: “Whoever doubts, know that Ibn ʿUmar, when he saw someone who did not raise his hands, would correct him.”
And Abū ʿAbdullāh, meaning Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, said: “Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us that he heard Zayd ibn Wāqid say: I heard Nāfiʿ say: When Ibn ʿUmar saw a man not raising his hands, he would correct him and order him to raise them.”
[Al-Tamheed - Volume 9 - Page 224]
Ibn Abdul-Barr mentioned:
It was said to Abū ʿAbdullāh (Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal): “Should we also raise our hands when standing after the two rak'ahs of prayer?” He said: “No, I do not follow the report (on this issue) of Sālim from his father, nor the report of Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr, for their wordings differ. The report of ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb contradicts the report of ʿAmr ibn Murrah.”
[Al-Tamheed - Volume 9 - Page 224]
Here Imam Ahmad says that he does not hold the view of raising the hands after the first tashahhud.
Ibn Abdul-Barr mentioned:
Abu Bakr al-Athram said: It was said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal regarding raising the hands between the two prostrations. He mentioned the hadith of Salim from Ibn ‘Umar, who does not raise his hands between the two prostrations. Then he said: “We will go to the hadith of Ibn ‘Umar.”
[Al-Tamheed - Volume 9 - Page 228]
Those who did not raise the hands except when opening prayer
Those who took this position from among the Tabi'een and Atba Tabi'een, viewed that the narrations talking about raising the hands before ruku' and after must have been abbrogated, because of the narration of Ibn Masoud, al-Bara ibn Azib and others.
ʿAbdullāh (ibn Mas'oud) narrated: “Shall I not demonstrate the Salat of Allah's Messenger to you?” Then he prayed, and he did not raise his hands except once.

Abdurrazzaq mentioned:
From Sufyan al-Thawri, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Al-Bara ibn Azib who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he said the takbīr, would raise his hands until his thumbs were seen close to his ears.”
And Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated similarly from Yazid, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Al-Bara ibn Azib with the same report, and added: “once (raise the hands only once), and did not repeat raising them in that prayer.”
[Musannaf Abdurrazzaq - Volume 2 - Page 70]
Both narrations are acceptable and Imam al-Tirmidhi declared the narration of Ibn Masoud as hasan.
They also took the actions of certain companion as evidence for its abbrogation. It has been reported that Ali and Ibn Masoud didn't raise their hands in prayer except for takbiratul ihram.

Al-Tahawi said: "Our companions (Hanafis), as well as Ibn Abī Laylā, al-Thawrī, and al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥayy, said: he does not raise his hands except in the opening takbīr."

Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "And more than one of the people of knowledge from among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Tābiʿīn held this view. And it is the opinion of Sufyān al-Thawrī and the people of Kūfa (among which Abu Hanifa)."
[Sunan al-Tirmidhi 257]

Al-Tahawi said:
"Abu Bakr ibn Ayyash said that he had not seen any jurist raise his hands except with the first takbīrah, and it is reported from Ali ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Umar that they would not raise their hands except at the opening of the prayer."

Not reproaching each other for this difference of opinion
Some people would fight over this issue, even though the Sahaba differed among themselves about this very issue.
It is not right to reproach one another for holding a different view regarding this, because it is a valid difference of opinion among the Sahaba.
Most scholars viewed that raising the hands besides takbiratul ihram is Sunnah, and this is the view that seems to be most accurate to us.

Ibn Abdul-Barr mentioned:
‘Abd al-Warith narrated to us: Qasim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Zuhayr said: Muhammad ibn Yazid narrated to us, Hafs ibn Ghiyath said: I heard Sufyan al-Thawri say: “If you see a man acting upon a matter in which there is Ikhtilaf (scholarly disagreement), and you hold a different view, then do not forbid him.”

Ibn Abdul-Barr said:
“Raising the hands is neither among the pillars (arkān) of the prayer nor an obligatory act within it, and that, as we mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, humility, submissiveness, and complete surrender are the essence and adornment of the prayer, as we have described, and this is the view of the majority (jumhūr).”
[Al-Tamheed - Volume 9 - Page 225]
Raising the hands is an act of Sunnah that adorns the prayer, it's not a pillar of prayer, nor is it obligatory, according to the majority of scholars.
