Is it allowed to shave the moustache? | Fitrah Tawheed

Ruling on shaving the moustache

It is narrated that the moustache can be trimmed, but is it okay to completely shave it off? There are some opinions about this issue.

To follow the Sunnah, one must always refer back to the authentic narrations, upon the understanding of the companions. There are many narrations about the moustache.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever does not take from his mustache, then he is not from us." [Sunan Tirmidhi 2761]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "To get the moustaches trimmed is a characteristic of the Fitrah (natural inclination)." [Sahih al-Bukhari 5888]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The deeds connected to the Fitrah are: Clipping the nails, taking (أَخْذُ) from the moustache and shaving the pubic hair." [Sunan an-Nasai 12]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard. [Sahih al-Bukhari 5893]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Closely trim the moustache, and let the beard grow." [Sahih Muslim 259a]

There are no narrations speaking about removing or shaving the moustache completely. Whenever you see such a narration, then know that the translation is incorrect.

The narrations speak about 'أَخْذُ الشَّارِبِ' (take from the moustache), 'قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ' (trim the moustache), ' أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ' (trim closely the moustache), 'انْهَكُوا الشَّوَارِبَ' (shortly trim the moustache), 'جُزُّوا الشَّوَارِبَ' (excessively trim the moustache).

The Sahaba explained and showed the Sunnah by their actions and interpretations. Looking at their understanding of the narrations helps us to know what the Sunnah is.

Ibn 'Umar used to trim his moustache so short that it looked shaved. [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/110]

'Ubaydullah ibn Abi Rafi' narrated: I saw Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Rafi' ibn Khadeej, Salamah ibn al-Akwa', Ibn 'Umar, Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, and Abu Asid trimming their mustaches closely, as if it were shaved. [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/110]

Closely trimming and just shortening the moustache is from the Sunnah, as is shown by the narrations and by the understanding of the Sahaba.

No narrations speak about 'حلق الشارب' (shaving the moustache), so it is not something that has been narrated to be from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). Imam Malik rightfully objected strongly against the practise of shaving the moustache.

The Fuqaha about the moustache

Imam Malik

Mutarraf ibn Abdullah narrated: Malik bin Anas was tall, of great stature, bald with a white head. His beard was also white with hints of blond. He used to wear 'Adani clothes, and he hated the shaving of the moustache and disapproved of it. He did not dye his white hair.'" [Al-Mudawanah 6/468 of Ibn Sahnun]

Ishaq ibn 'Issah al-Tabba' narrated: I saw Malik ibn Anas with a thick moustache and I asked him about it. He said: Zayd ibn Aslam told me on the authority of 'Amir ibn 'Abdullah ibn Al-Zubayr that when Umar ibn al-Khattab got angry, he would twist his moustache and blow. [Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 1/65 of Al-Tabarani]

Yahya narrated: I heard Malik say to take from the moustache until the upper lip appears fully, and not to mutilate oneself (by shaving it off). [Al-Muwatta 2/922]

'Umar ibn Abdul-'Aziz

Abdul-'Aziz ibn 'Umar asked his father ('Umar ibn Abdul-'Aziz) about the moustache, and he replied that the excess of the moustache is to be cut, so that the upper lip appears. [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/110]

Imam Layth Ibn Sa'd

Ibn Wahb narrated: Layth Ibn Sa'd said he did not like for anyone to shave his moustache, as he hated this. But one should trim his moustache by removing what is on the upper lip. And he hated a long moustache. [Al-Tamheed 21/64]

Imam Shafi'i

And there is nothing specific mentioned by Imam Shafi'i about this subject. However, (his students) Al-Muzani and Al-Rabi' used to closely trim their moustache, so it is believed they took this from Imam Shafi'i. [Al-Tamheed 21/64]

Imam Ahmad

Ahmad ibn Hisham al-Antaki and Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated that they saw Imam Ahmad closely trim his moustache. [Al-Tarjal 74-84 of Abu Bakr al-Khallal]

Al-Athram narrated: Abu Abdullah (Imam Ahmad) was asked what the Sunnah of taking from the moustache is. He replied, closely trimming it. [Al-Tarjal 74-84 of Abu Bakr al-Khallal]

Hanbal narrated: I asked Abu Abdullah how one takes from the moustache. He replied, it is okay to closely trim the moustache or to shorten the moustache. [Al-Tarjal 74-84 of Abu Bakr al-Khallal]

Hanbal narrated: I saw Abu Abdullah holding his moustache with his hand and cutting it while looking in the mirror. [Al-Tarjal 74-84 of Abu Bakr al-Khallal]

So the Sunnah is to closely trim the moustache, or to leave a regular moustache by trimming excess hair so that the upper lip appears fully. Having a long moustache is not from the Sunnah, just like shaving it off completely.

The moustache is part of Islam, and it cannot be shaved off. The Prophet ordered to shorten the moustache and to let the beard grow, while allowing the beard to be trimmed to a fist length.

There came a (Persian) man from the Majus to the Prophet (ﷺ), and this man had a shaved beard with a thick moustache. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, what is this? He replied, this is from our religion. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said, in our religion, we are ordered to closely trim the moustache and to let the beard grow. [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/111]

Abu Athari writes about basic principles within Islam. He uses his critical and well-researched way to spread knowledge of the first three Muslim generations.
